Italian Patriot. Joining the Barnabite order after an unsuccessful love story, he was an ardent follower of Giuseppe Garibaldi in his fight for Italian independence. Known to have endangered his life several times while assisting the wounded under heavy fire, after a long search, he was captured along with count Giovanni Livraghi near Comacchio and escorted to Bologna by Austrian troops. Convicted by a military tribunal with having been caught carrying arms, both men were executed by firing squad on August 8, 1849, in Bologna. To this day, Bassi remains one of the most popular figures of the Italian revolution. Several monuments and streets across Italy are dedicated to him, including a bust at the Janiculum in Rome and a monument in one of Bologna's main streets which also carries his name.
