In 1032 he received the duchy of Burgundy from Henri and was named first Peer of France. For this special status among the other vassals he renounced his claims for the throne but remained inimical against his brother. Contemporaries describe him as brutal and violent. He spent his life in feuds with his own vassals and plundered churches and monasteries without inhibition. Around 1033 he married Helie de Semur, daughter of Dalmace I Seigneur Semur-en-Brionnais. They had five children but Robert repudiated her in 1046. She became a nun and died after 1055. In 1048 he married secondly to Ermengarde de Anjou, widow of Geoffrey de Chateau-Landon, who bore him a daughter. He was murdered with his second wife at the church of Fleury-sur-Ouche.
