Daughter of Kamehameha The Great and his sacred wife, Keopuolani. Sister to Kauikeaouli, Kamehameha III, her name means "Glowing Fires". As per Hawaiian tradition, she and her brother were expected to marry, keeping the bloodline pure. Marriage of the two sacred children was discussed by the council of high chiefs in September, 1824, but the horrified missionaries forbade such a union although from time immemorial it was a Hawaiian tradition. Torn between the wishes of the Hawaiian community, and the wishes of the missionaries and her long dead mother that she "Grow up a Christian Child", she became ill and depressed. The son of her and her brother was born September 17th, 1836, but lived only a few hours. Although her brother re-married, he always visited her grave.
