Anglican Priest and British Antiquarian. Born in Cambridgeshire, he became one of the most famous antiquarians of his age by virtue of his essays and engravings of historic sites across England. His most famous work was at Stonehenge and Avebury, and it was he who proposed the erroneous but enduring idea that the stone circles were built by Druids. In later years, Stukeley - as well as being a cleric - became a Druid and called himself Chardonyx. He is buried in an unmarked grave - by his own request - at St Mary Magdalene, East Ham, London.
