Religious Leader. A master of Tibetian Buddhism, he was born in 1910. He was considered a tulku, or incarnation, of another great Tibetan Buddhist. He entered a monastery as a child. After spending time meditating in hermitages and caves, and studying with Buddhist masters, he began teaching the spiritual concepts he had learned to others. During the invasion of Tibet in the 1950s, he escaped with his family to Bhutan, where he became a well-respected Buddhist teacher. He helped found the Shechen monastery in Nepal, and worked tirelessly to preserve Buddhist culture. He traveled to many different countries teaching Buddhist philosophy. His books have been translated into many languages. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche died in Bhutan in 1991. He is highly respected as a teacher, scholar and poet.
