Radio Broadcaster, Inventor. He became interested in radio back in 1911, when it was still a brand new concept. He created his own 1/2KW spark transmitter, one of the first licensed amateur sets in Canada, and used that to experiment with transmission signals. By 1920 his little radio station was reaching both the Maritimes and the Pacific Coast. In 1921 he entered a competition sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, and became the first amateur radio operator in Canada (and one of only 26 people in North America) to successfully transmit a signal across the Atlantic. In 1925, he invented the world's first alternating current (AC) radio tube which enabled radios to be powered by ordinary household current. He manufactured and sold the product under the guise of Rogers Majestic Corporation Ltd. The company would later introduce the first power rectifier pentad tube and the spray-shield tube. In 1927, he started the first all electric radio station - CFRB (Canada's First Rogers Batteryless). The station - and those call letters, still exist in the Toronto area to this day. In 1931, Rogers was granted the first television license. Many years after his death, his son, Ted Rogers Jr., took over the family business and turned it into a communications empire.
