Inventor. In 1797 he received the first United States patent for a clock. He later mass produced mantel clocks so they became affordable to the masses and is credited with helping start the clock industry. He was the first person in history to set up a system of interchangeable parts, and the first person to legitimately mass produce any object in the western hemisphere. He was using a form of milling machine 20 years before Eli Whitney's invention. Later, he became the first to mass produce a shelf clock, which made clocks more affordable for the lower classes. The town of Terryville, Connecticut is named for him.
