Opera mezzo-soprano. Born Carmela Anna Ponzillo; the oldest of three children of Maddalena and Bernardino Ponzillo. She sang with her sister Rosa as "The Ponzillo Sisters" until Rosa joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1918. She made her Metropolitan debut in 1925 as Amneris in "Aida."
