Artist. Also known as Fitz Hugh Lane, he was a maritime painter who pioneered the luminist style, so called because his paintings celebrated the transcendence of light in ordinary scenes. He was a wealthy painter of seascapes, harbor scenes and ship portraits, for which he was commissioned by their owners. But he was first recognized nationally in the early 20th century when Luminism became a recognized art style. He was born Nathaniel Rogers Lane, but in 1831 he petitioned the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to change his name to Fitz Henry Lane. Confusion arising from the way he signed his paintings may have led to the art world's mistaken belief that his middle name was actually Hugh. The mistake was only recently discovered, and several venues named for him, as well as his gravemarker, perpetuate the error.
