Composer. He was a prolific Danish composer of the 19th century. Born Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann, he studied music in Germany and France. He was the organist at the Copenhagen Cathedral from 1843 to 1900. He was co-founder and director of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. All his life he worked with music for the theatre, and being a close friend of the poet Hans Christian Andersen, he composed the music for the operas "The Raven" and "Lille Kirsten" to Andersen's text as well as for some of Andersen's plays. Another close friend was the choreographer and ballet master August Bournonville , and together they created five ballets for the Royal Danish Ballet. His vast musical production includes songs, hymns, choral works, orchestral works, chamber music and music for the organ and the piano. His music had influence on later Scandinavian composers such as Grieg and Carl Nielsen. Along with his wife and several children, his son-in-law Niels W. Gade was a respected composer. His son, who was a composer, has the same name as him, thus causing confusion for credits. Erected in 1905, a huge statue of him in a seated position is in the public square in Copenhagen.
