Novelist/Poet. He is best known for his novel The Spook Who Sat by the Door, first published March 1969, it was chosen as The Sunday Times Book of the Year. In 1973 his novel was made into a movie. His other works include Blues for an African Princess (poems 1971), Ammunition (poetry, 1975), and Baghdad Blues (1976). In 2010 he wrote Trotter, a screenplay for a film. He served in the military from 1952 to 1954. In 1958 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for bravery during the Baghdad revolution.
