Gospel Singer. He was one of gospel's most legendary figures. His career started with The Northern California State Youth Choir. He later accompanied his brother Edwin and founded The Edwin Hawkins Singers. Together they produced one of the first gospel songs that was a major crossover of all time, "Oh Happy Day." In the 1970s he left The Edwin Hawkins Singers to establish the Love Center Church in Oakland, California, he and his Love Center Choir became very successful with their "Love Alive" recordings, they sold over a million copies from the 1970s to the 1990s. His recordings and published songs include hits such as "Going Up Yonder," "Changed," "Be Grateful," "He's That Kind of Friend," and many more. He was the recipient of many awards including a Grammy in 1981.
