Choreographer. Specializing in tap, he choreographed several Broadway musicals, starting with the 1952 Eubie Blake revue "Shuffle Along." He was nominated for the Tony award three times, for "Eubie!" (1979), "Sophisticated Ladies" (1981), and finally won for "Black and Blue" (1989). In addition to his stage career, he choreographed for film and television, notably the Francis Ford Coppola film "The Cotton Club." A master in the art of tap dancing, he also taught some of the best dancers in the genre, including Ben Vereen, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and Hinton Battle.
