Artist. A sculptor who worked in bronze, he created many well known pieces that are installed in public spaces throughout the United States. His first major commission is perhaps his most famous: the "Olympic Gateway" at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum created to commemorate the 1984 Olympic Games. The piece was controversial at the time because it features full frontal male and female nudes. Other significant public works of his include a bronze of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Washington, D.C.; the Charlie "Bird" Parker Memorial in Kansas City; and "The Great Bronze Doors" and "Statue of Mary" at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. In 1992, he married actress Angelica Huston. He made a cameo appearance in Wes Anderson's 2004 film "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou."
