Jack Wrangler, who brought his chiseled physique to stardom in many gay sex films (and some straight ones), then met and later married the singer Margaret Whiting, leading to a career as a writer and cabaret and theater producer, died on Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 62 and lived in Manhattan.

The cause was emphysema, said Jeffrey Schwarz, a close friend and the producer of the documentary "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon."

With his rugged good looks, blond hair and steely blue eyes, Mr. Wrangler (originally John Stillman) appeared in more than 30 gay sex films and 20 straight ones in the 1970s and early '80s. His stardom coincided with the gay liberation movement, and for some he became a role model.

As Outcyclopedia, a gay-oriented online reference, wrote, "Many gay men in the '70s and '80s cited Jack as an integral part of their coming out process, as his against-the-stereotypes onscreen persona helped show them that a man can be gay and still be a man."
