Automotive Pioneer. She was the first woman to drive an automobile across the United States. On June 9, 1909 she and three friends (who never drove) left New York City driving a Maxwell touring car. After 41 days and multiple road problems and 3,800 miles later they arrived in San Francisco. She later wrote a book recounting their adventures in 1961, "Veil, Duster and Tire Iron". On October 17, 2000 she was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, being the first woman to be inducted.
