He entered films in the mid 20`s at First National as an assistant to cameraman George Folsey and after several years as a camera operator graduated to lighting cameraman in 1937. With Columbia Pictures from 1944, he worked best outdoors and in the 50s and early 60s captured exciting images and memorable landscapes for several top-notch Westerns by Delmer Daves and Budd Boetticher. Among his credits are Orson Welles` “The Lady from Shanghai” (1947), “Miss Sadie Thompson” (1953), “The Long Gray Line” (1955/directed by John Ford), “3:10 to Yuma” (1957), “The Last Hurrah” (1958), “Ride Lonesome” (1959), “Two Rode Together” (1961) and “Spencer`s Mountain” (1962). Sometimes credited as Charles Lawton Jr., he died during production of “Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama`s Hung You in the Closet, and I`m Feeling so Sad”.
