Motion Picture Director. Originally a boy actor with the Gus Edwards company, he became a musical comedy star on Broadway in the early 1920s. In 1928 he went to Hollywood to appear in feature films, among them "Midnight" (1928) and "Little Johnny Jones" (1929, in the title role), then wrote, directed and starred in a series of 26 Columbia comedy shorts. He made his debut as a feature film director in 1932, turning out movies for Columbia, Universal, Paramount and (from 1938 to 1949) MGM, mainly comedies and light fare. His credits include "Honolulu" (1939), the Marx Bros.' "At the Circus" (1939) and "Go West" (1940), "Easy to Wed" (1946), "Song of the Thin Man" (1947), and "Neptune's Daughter" (1949, with Esther Williams). Freelancing in the 1950s, he directed "A Woman of Distinction" (1950), "Ain't Misbehavin' " (1955), and "Mary Had a Little...", his last film, made in England in 1961. Buzzell was at one time married to actress Ona Munson.
