Danish Politician and Bishop of Lolland-Falster. Co-author of the Denmark Constitution of 1849. After the Second Schleswig War, a disheartened Monrad and family immigrated to New Zealand. There, he pioneered virgin land into a working farm. He helped the New Zealand Company to find suitable settlers from Scandinavia and helped many Danish immigrants to find land to settle in and around Dannevirke. His efforts were thwarted by the Maori riots to such an extent that he followed his sons in returning to Denmark in 1869. Before his departure, he presented his collection of sketches and etchings by old European masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Dürer and van Dyck, to the New Zealand Government. They became the seed that grew into the National Museum of New Zealand.
