Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1850 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in the 4th United States Regular Infantry up to the beginning of the Civil War, rising to 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster. In May 1861 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Regular Army Commissary of Subsistence Department. He would go on to hold high level roles, serving as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for first the Department of Western Virginia, then for the Army of the Ohio, then the Department of the Tenneessee, then finally the Depot for Cincinnati, Ohio. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on January 1, 1863, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious during the war". He continued his Army career after the Civil War ended, retiring in 1890 as a Brigadier General and Commissary General of Subsistence.
