Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a 1st Sergeant in Company I, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then as a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 5th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, then finally Lieutenant Colonel of the 8th United States Colored Heavy Artillery. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
