United States Army Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York in 1891 and initially served with the 7th Infantry as the aide-de-camp to Major General Frank Wheaton. He served with several infantry units in Colorado, Washington and California. By 1907 he was in the Philippines, initially as the Inspector General, then as the Assistant Chief of the Constabulary through September, 1912. He was detached for service with the Aviation Section, Signal Corps from November 1916 through July, 1917 when he assumed command of the 49th Infantry at Camp Merritt, New Hampshire. In March, 1918 he became the commanding officer of the 11th Infantry and, part of the American Expeditionary Force, participated in the Battle of St. Mihel and the Argonne-Muese Offensive. He then commanded the Casual Officers Depot, Service of Supply at Blois, France and Base Section 4 at Le Havre, France, where the French decorated him with the Legion of Honor. He returned to the states in April, 1919 and later became the chief of personnel in the War Department. He retired, with 39 years of service, on September 16, 1925.
