He volunteered at the Shepherd Elementary School in Washington D. C., judging their science fairs, speaking with their Parent Teacher Association, and arranging for computer donations. A resident of Silver Springs, Maryland, he was a husband and father, a Boy Scout Leader for his son's troop, and a church trustee. He was, in fact, at Shoppers to purchase groceries for his church's youth group that day. He was a Civil War buff and amateur genealogist, actively researching his wife's Civil War ancestors and his own Missouri roots.
