Motion Picture Director, Actor, Producer, Writer. A native of New York City, he was born Irving Camisky. He started his acting career on Broadway and entered into movies around 1909. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1913 and 1925, including two that he wrote, "Conscience" (1914), and "The Haunting Memory" (1915). Two are still available in video, "The Saphead" (1920) and "Sex" (1920). He directed 80 films, most between 1921 and 1945, although "Double Dynamite" was directed in 1951. The stars he directed include leading ladies Shirley Temple, Betty Grable, and Alice Faye. His 1928 film "In Old Arizona" was nominated for an Academy Award. He produced eleven movies; the first full-length feature was "The Man from Hell's River" (a 1922 movie he starred in, wrote and directed.) In 1943, he was awarded the "Thomas A Edison Foundation Gold Medal" for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences. His "Hollywood Walk of Fame" star is located at 6816 Hollywood Blvd.
