Governor of the Montana Territory. Born in Stanford, Dutchess County, New York, Benjamin Platt Carpenter (also known as B. Platt Carpenter) received his education in law at Union College. Upon admission to the Bar he opened a private law practice in Poughkeepsie, New York, and later served as the District Attorney of Dutchess County from 1864 until 1869. He was elected to the State Senate in 1876 and 1877, and later was elected as a County Court Judge, serving from 1878 until 1882. His reputation as a jurist and prosecutor led to his selection in 1882 as the nominee for Lieutenant Governor of New York. Carpenter lost the election. On December 16, 1884, President Chester A. Arthur appointed Carpenter as the Governor of the Montana Territory. Governor Carpenter’s term was quite short, as the newly elected President, Grover Cleveland, removed him from office on July 13, 1885. However Carpenter was highly regarded by the Montana residents, and he remained in the Territory to assist the movement to statehood. He was a delegate to the Montana Constitutional Convention in 1889. He died on December 24, 1921 in Chula Vista, California.
