US Senator. Born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, he graduated first from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1808, then received a degree in 1811 from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1812 he moved to Madison County, Alabama and established a medical practice there. During the Creek War of 1812-1813 (part of the larger War of 1812) he entered the United States Army, and served in the staff of Major General Andrew Jackson as a Surgeon. After the war he served as a delegate to the Alabama State Constitutional Convention, and was elected to the Alabama State House of Representatives in 1820. In 1825, he was elected as a Democrat-Republican Senator to the United States Senate. However, while on route to assume his seat in Washington D.C., he fell ill and died at his childhood home estate in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Born in County of Lunenburg, the first of October
1790, he removed to Alabama in 1812, was elected one of her representatives in the Senate of the United States, and died in his native County, on his way to the city of Washington, on the 24th. of January, 1826, in the 37th year of his age. He discharged his duties in life, and died with a Christian faith in a happy immortality.
