U.S. Congressman. Educated at Lincoln Preparatory School, he attended Suffolk University and was a registrar of vital statistics for the City of Boston. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, (1937-43). During World War II, he served as a special agent in the Counter-intelligence, attached to the 77th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, in the South Pacific. After the war, he was a member of the Massachusetts general court for ten years, a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, (1947-55) and vice chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee, for four years. In 1959, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1979. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 73.
