Georgia Governor. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Duke University and the University of Georgia and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949, received his law degree in 1952 and opened a law office in Albany, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, serving (1956-67). In 1974, he was elected as a Democrat the 77th Governor of Georgia, serving until 1983 and was the first Georgia Governor to serve two consecutive four-year terms. After serving as Governor, he joined the Atlanta law firm of King & Spalding and practiced law until his death from a heart attack at age 76.
