Brigadier General US Army

He received his Medical Degree from Jefferson College in 1890. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant, assistant surgeon, in the US Army in 1896, and graduated from the Army Medical School at Washington, DC, in 1897. He served in the Spanish American War and was one of the few medical officers during the Boxer Rebellion in China. In 1902, he returned to Washington, DC, and served as an instructor for sanitary chemistry and operative surgery at the Army Medical School. His 1910 invention of the mechanical liquid chlorine purifier was applied to municipal drinking water supplies throughout the world. He also devised and patented a water filter that was used by the Army for many years. Promoted Colonel in 1917, he was assigned to the Finance and Supply Division in the Office of The Surgeon General, during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his service. After the war, he served as department surgeon in Hawaii, was promoted Brigadier General Commanding General of the Army Medical Center, a post he held until he retired in December 1931. In 1965, the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, was named in his honor.
