World War I US Army Brigadier General. He helped establish what is now the US Army Armor branch. An 1889 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he worked as a civil engineer before entering the military as a Lieutenant in 1891. During the Spanish-American War he participated in the Santiago and Puerto Rican Campaigns, and later served with the Philippine Scouts (1905 to 1910). At America's entry into World War I he was a Colonel on General Pershing's staff, and became Quartermaster of the American Expeditionary Force. In December 1917, Rockenbach was named first chief of the newly-formed Tank Corps. For his efforts he was promoted to Brigadier General in June 1918, and subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
