French explorer who took part in the expeditions organised by Lady Franklin to find her husband, the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, missing in his search for the North West Passage. Popular amongst his fellow explorers and amongst the peoples he met - he built an artifical leg for an Eskimo encountered on his voyage. During the search for Franklin, Bellot fell beneath the ice in the Wellington Channel and went missing. The memorial to him was aised through public subscription in Britain 'to the intrepid young Bellot of the French Navy who in the endeavour to rescue Franklin shared the fate and the glory of that illustrious navigator'.
