He appeared in many films from 1940 to 1989, including the Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, "Odd Man Out" in 1947, "Against the Wind" in 1948, "Superman III" in 1983, and "Superman IV" in 1987. Born Robert Rutherford Beatty, he graduated with a BA from the University of Toronto before going to England for an acting career in 1939. Besides making films, he was involved with radio during World War II until 1993 and in television productions for BBC. He joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, appearing in the West End on stage 1939 in "Grouse in June."
