Marker laid at the closing of D.E.F. Records. In 1993, producer Rick Rubin and founder of the record company DEF Records, literally had a funeral for his label when he changed the name of the company to American Recordings. After seeing the word "def" in a dictionary, he believed that the word was against the image that he was trying to project for the company. A mock funeral was done for the label name change and presided over by the Reverend Al Sharpton at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. An open casket was filled with flowers, record albums, personal mementos and the casket was lowered while watched over by Black Panthers with prop shotguns. Some of the 2,000 plus mourners in attendance included recording artist Tom Petty, Rosanna Arquette and members of the band Slayer.
