Roman Catholic Saint, Pope. He was the ninth bishop of Rome between 138 and 142 AD. According to ecclesiastical tradition, he established the figures of godparents during Baptism, created a rule for the clerical hierarchy, and founded the Minor Orders. Hyginus was also known as a philosopher. He was proclaimed Saint following the persecution of Emperor Antoninus Pius.
