Famous Brazilian writer, considered one of the greatest or the greatest of Brazilian writers. Left a vast and varied literary work. He was a novelist, short story writer, columnist, playwright, poet, journalist, literary critic and feuilletonist.
He was born into a poor family of Morro do Livramento in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Having never attended college, his academic training was limited to basic public school. He held several public offices during his life, but achieved reknown through the publication of his articles, chronicles and poems in newspapers and magazines. He was the founder and first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (Academia Brasileira de Letras).
He was married to Carolina Augusta Xavier de Novais, Portuguese (born in Porto, in 1835 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1904), his great love, with whom he lived in harmony for 35 years, until the date of his death. After becoming a widower, his life was very depressing, culminating in illness and death . He passed away at 3:20 a.m. from September 29, 1908 , in Rio de Janeiro, with 69 years of age.
He was buried with honors in the Pantheon of the Academia Brasileira de Letras of Cemitério São João Baptista, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
