Musician, composer. Named after Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the scouting movement, this guitarist was born in the municipality of Varre-e-Sai, Rio de Janeiro. Known for his ability for improvisation, he experimented with and performed various types of Brazilian music such as bossa nova and samba, as well as jazz. He is remembered by many for his composition Samba Triste and for his collaboration with poet Vinicius de Moraes which resulted in Samba da Bênção. Both compositions have been covered extensively and are considered by many to be Brazilian music standards. On August 23rd, 2000, he was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Sorocava Clinic in Rio de Janeiro, where he died 3 days later due to pneumonia and organ failure attributed to his diabetes.
