Tutor to Charles Darwin. Replaced Joseph Shaw as tutor to Charles Darwin from 1829 to 1830. He was born in Claypath, Durham, on 23 February 1794, the only son of John Graham, managing clerk to Thomas Griffith of the Bailey, in the city of Durham. He was educated at the grammar school in Durham and matriculated at Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1812, being elected to a scholarship in 1813.

Shipley described Graham as “one of the most brilliant of the alumni of the College (fourth Wrangler and Chancellor’s Classical Medallist in 1816), who was elected Master of the College in 1830, and was appointed to the Bishopric of Chester in 1848. Graham was one of the small group of Cambridge Liberals in the days of the first Reform Bill, and a strong supporter of the abolition of University tests. As a disciplinarian in College he is said to have been somewhat too easy-going”. (Shipley 1924, p. 127)"

the spouse of the Reverend John Graham, Bishop of Chester was Charlotte Porteus, daughter of Robert Porteus, Rector of Wickham Bishops (1768-1803). Charlotte was born in 1802 at Wickham Bishops, married John Graham in 1833 at St James, Bury St Edmunds and died in 1844 at Chester. The couple had eight children: John, Mary Anne, Harriet, Eleanor, Henry, George, Charlotte and Albert. All of their children were born in Cambridge when John was the Master of Christ's College.
