James [1st] married Mary Frances (Watson) Newcomb ["Mollie"] (Feb 1868 - 10 Oct 1918) on 17 Jan 1889 in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

Mollie was the daughter of John Watson (1840-1906) and Louisa (Barney) Watson (1841-1930).

In the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses, James and Mollie were living in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

Mollie died of Bronchial Pneumonia in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, the widowed James was living in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. Mollie's widowed mother, Louisa, was living with him.

James [2nd] married Nannie M. (VanMetre) Newcomb (8 Dec 1874 - 5 Dec 1958) on 8 Apr 1920 in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

In the 1930 and 1940 U.S. Censuses, James and Nannie were living in Falling Waters, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

NEWCOMB, Dayton, 46, volunteer fireman of Martinsburg, in an attempt to help the John W. DERN family, lost his life. NEWCOMB died in a hospital an hour later of heart dilation brought on by overexertion. James DERN, 32, was overcome and burned in an attempt to rescue members of his family from the fire that damaged their home and a store to the extent of about $2,000.

He married Nellie Savannah (Hutzler) Newcomb (9 Nov 1914 - 7 Feb 1997) on 11 Apr 1932 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
