Betty E. “Shorty” Scott, 87, of La Crescent, died on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Valley View Health Care in Houston, Minn.

She was born in St. Paul, Minn., on April 10, 1927, to George and Gertie (Oevering) Heyd. She attended La Crosse schools and was a graduate of Central High School. Betty married Everett Niebeling on December 1, 1945, in La Crosse, and they later divorced. She then married Oren Scott on April 19, 1980, in La Crosse. Oren preceded Betty in death on July 24, 2010.

Betty worked at the La Crosse Rubber Mills for many years and then worked for many years as a hostess at The Commodore in La Crescent. She then operated T & S Cleaning with her son, Terry, for several years before retiring at the age of 79.

Betty “Shorty” was always very fond of animals and loved caring for her pet cats and dogs over the years. She also enjoyed watching the birds and deer outside her home.

Shorty was unique in the way she saw the world around her and how she approached life and the people in it. While she may have been small in stature, she loved her family and friends with a heart that was bigger than she was and she saw the good in everyone! She was caring, generous, feisty, tough, and adventurous and oh, did she love to laugh!!

When people remember Shorty, they will most definitely remember her infectious sense of humor that could always make you smile…whether you wanted to or not! Children, grandchildren, family and friends could count on a visit with her to raise their eyebrows and their spirits, right up to her final days! She had an amazing gift of humor and that was such a beautiful way to live! She will be missed by all who knew her!

Betty is survived by a son, Tom ( Colleen) Niebeling; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Niebeling; nine grandchildren, William (Mandi) Niebeling, Angela Niebeling, Nicole (Chris) Fruechte, Terry Scott Niebeling, Kelly Niebeling, Katie Niebeling, Jaimee (Lamin) Fofana, Sophie and Zack Emery; and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Oren, Betty was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Terry, on June 23, 2014; and her former husband, Everett, on February 17, 1992.
