Doyle Larue Ridall, 82, of Berwick passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 2014, in Berwick Hospital Center, in lieu of retiring to Del Boca Vista, Fla.
Born in Berwick on Dec. 14, 1932, he was the son of the late Alfred Earl and Sallie Margaret (Jacoby) Ridall. He graduated from Berwick High School, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he worked at Columbia Packaging, Dairy Lea and the Berwick Forge. He was a paper carrier for the Press Enterprise for many years and attained “Carrier of the Month” for October 1998. He retired from Berwick Offray after over 25 years of exemplary employment.
Doyle was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, Berwick, where he previously served as a Eucharistic Minister and usher. He loved music, especially Elvis, and enjoyed helping his sons D.J. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, the lottery, doing crossword puzzles, and taking a daily walk. He was known for his “backwards language, interpretive hearing” sense of humor, and unique fashion sense. He enjoyed watching “Seinfeld,” “Hee Haw,” “Larry’s Country Diner,” and “The Muppet Show” in its heyday, as well as old movies on TCM, AMC and Encore Western Channel. Doyle was a Berwick Bulldog, Penn State and long-suffering Cleveland Browns football fan, as well as a Dodgers baseball fan.
He excelled at and participated in many local sports, among them: fast pitch/modified softball for six decades; multiple bowling leagues (having a high series of 694, attained when a 600 series meant something), and participated in many pick-up football and basketball games (where he was “money” from anywhere on the court).
He cherished time spent with his family, and had a great influence on his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great-granddaughter, Faye Valentina Ciuferri, in February.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret L. “Peggy” (Fink) Ridall; sons: Joseph D. Ridall, Berwick; Stephen P. Ridall and wife Andrea (Chamberlain), Nescopeck Township; grandchildren: Brittany, wife of Capt. Joseph Ciuferri, Joshua, Lance Cpl. Christian, Aidan, Davin, and Saylor Ridall. He is also survived by a sister, Betty Lohman, Temple, Texas, as well as many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Robert Chamberlain, Elwood, Jacob, Clyde and Larry Ridall, and sisters: Donna DiFebo and Margaret Warner.
A Mass and Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, Berwick, with his pastor, the Reverend Francis Tamburro, officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9 until the time of the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation, Stuart Tank Fund, 725 W. Front St., Berwick, PA 18603, as sadly, “The Human Fund” is now defunct.
