Prior to his service in the 54th Ohio, he served as a musician in the 35th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War from his enlistment on Aug 17, 1861, to muster out Sept 10, 1862, at Nashville, Tenn. His son Orion also served in the 35th as a drummer boy.
