"Birger Lawrence Johnson Jr., 87, of 66 Forest Road, Asheville, N.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Mission Hospital. He was born in Chicago and raised in New York City. Mr. Johnson prepared for college at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn. He attended Yale University, where he was a member of Berkeley College and St. Elmo, and graduated in 1937 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He worked for Mack Truck, General Electric and Latrobe Timken Steel Co. as a metallurgist until he retired in 1984. He was a resident of Ligonier for 40 years until 1993, when he moved to Asheville to live with his son. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Deines Johnson; a son, Birger L. Johnson III; and a daughter, Karin Johnson Giltner. He is survived by his half brother, Gordon Johnson and wife Fran of Connellsville; his half sister, Carol Pernu of California; his son, Bruce Johnson and wife Linda of Asheville; his grandchildren, Ingrid G. Crawley and husband Peter, Hilde and Gus Giltner, Keli and Matthew Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Liam and Solene Crawley. Birger will be remembered best for his love and skill of gardening and snow skiing and for developing friendships of all ages. He started skiing in Massachusetts in 1939, before the use of powered lifts, and continued every season until 1999, teaching many generations of children along the way. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. in St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church, Rector. The family will greet friends at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Birger's name to St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 336, Ligonier, PA 15658."
