Confederate military records show Madison enlisted in Company I, Virginia 36th Infantry Regiment in his home county of Giles, Virginia on 16 Apr 1862. He was 37.
It is believed he was captured at the Battle of Piedmont in June 1864 and possibly sent to Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Indiana, then exchanged in February 1865.
On her notarized application in 1888 as a "Widow of a Deceased Soldier Sailor or Marine for a Pension", his wife Ellen stated he "died of fever in hospital in Richmond, Virginia." It is believed he died on February 19, 1865.
He is presumed buried near Richmond, Virginia.
