George Thomas Harder

Harder, George Thomas – Tatamagouche, January 14, 1923 – February 20, 2009, passed away in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche. Born with twin brother, John in a Mennonite community in Kuban, Russia came to Canada in 1926 as refugees from Stalin, living with his family in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. George was a volunteer in the Canadian Army in WWII, serving overseas in the UK, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a member of a special unit in the Canadian Intelligence Corps with training in counter sabotage. In post war period, he gained his commission as Second Lieutenant, serving for Canada for four years and was honorably discharged in 1954. He graduated from U.B.C. in 1960 and lived a full and happy life serving communities in B.C. and working many years as a teacher and high school librarian. In his retirement to Victoria, B.C., he and his wife Irene, worked as tour escorts for seniors with travel throughout North America and Europe, and later made many trips abroad, and across Canada to Nova Scotia. In October 2006 they moved to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia to be closer to family. They were fortunate to spend precious time together and tour the province. George was ever thankful for the love and care of his wife of 54 years. He was proud of the achievements of his siblings and their families, as well as his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, John; sister, Nettie Klassen. He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Lyn (David) Sutherland, Tatamagouche; grandchildren, Micah (Treva) Stewart, Tatamagouche; Nathan Stewart, Meghan Stewart and Ceilidh Sutherland, all of Nelson, B.C.; great grandchildren, Bryn and Gage; Adopted son, Ron (Linda) , Victoria, B.C.; grandson, Shane (Valerie), Victoria, B.C.; great-grandson, Trent; former daughter-in-law, Vicky, Victoria, B.C.; brothers, Jack (Lorraine), Nick (Lena), Ben (Jessie); sisters, Anne (Bernard) Wiens, Amanda (Henry) Peters; brother-in-law, John Klassen. Special thanks to his many caregivers, especially Dr. Moss and nurses at Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Staff at the Halifax Infirmary, Dr. MacLeod and nurses in the Restorative Care Unit, staff at the cancer unit and Dr. Bell and Dr. Hollen-Hurst. Cremation has taken place. No Visitation or funeral services by request. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 64, Tatamagouche will conduct a tribute service to honor George’s service to his country, Thursday, February 26, 6:30 p.m. in the legion hall. Memorial donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care at Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital.
