Sharon S. Newing, 77, of Toledo passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on December 13, 2016 at Toledo Hospital. She was born in Bryan, OH on April 15, 1939 to Olan and Bertha (McDonald) Rubel. The youngest of seven children, Sharon very much enjoyed being part of a large family. She graduated from Adrian (MI) High School, Adrian College, and attended the University of Toledo to obtain her Master's in Education degree. She taught briefly in the Bedford, Michigan Public Schools before residing in London, England while her husband attended university there. Upon her return to the United States, she stayed at home to take care of her two children for their early years and then returned to her first love, teaching. She devoted her life to children, not only her own, but to the children of the Toledo community serving as a Toledo Public School teacher. She taught at both McKinley Elementary School and DeVeaux Junior High where she was a Special Education teacher. She retired there with more than 30 years of teaching to her credit. Sharon truly enjoyed her interaction with her students and seeing their success brought much joy to her life. She was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church; Alpha Delta Kappa, teaching sorority; and Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.).

Sharon is survived by her son, Charles Newing of Toledo; daughter, Laura (Paul) Rathkamp of Danville, CA; grandchildren, Erich, Austin and Tyler; sister, Miriam Castor of Bryan, OH; brothers, Donald (Marguerite) Rubel of Bryan, OH and Ned (Becky) Rubel of Adrian, MI; sisters-in-law, Waneta Rubel and Jan (William) Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lois Clarke; brothers, Gerald and James Rubel; step-mother Dorothy Rubel and step-sister, Phyllis Jean Hagelberger.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH 43623. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan, OH. Tributes in Sharon's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 15120, Chicago, IL60693.
