J. Robert Smolenski, age 91, of Grand Rapids, died on Friday, February 12, 2010. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.

Surviving are nine children, Anne (Peter) Fitch, Mary Sue Grinnell, Roberta Hummel, Meg (Ken) Hillary, Laura (Harold) Hupp, Jane DeYoung, Sara Smolenski (Linda Burpee), Pat (Rich) Spreng, and Martha (John) Johnson; 32 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; brother, John (Jo) Smolenski; daughter-in-law, Kathy Smolenski; sisters-in-law, Millie Smolenski and Emma Hanke; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mary Burkholder Smolenski, his son, Judge Michael Smolenski, his parents, Rose Miskewitz Smolenski, John Smolenski, and stepmother, Irene Smolenski, in-laws, A.B and Irene Burkholder, brother, Bill Smolenski, brother and sister-in-law, Jane and Kitz Kitzmiller, brother-in-law, Gilbert Hanke, and two grandchildren, Tony Grinnell and Mary DeYoung.

Bob graduated from Catholic Central High School, Grand Rapids Junior College, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Law School. Bob served as a captain in the Air Force in Saipan during World War II. He practiced law for many years before serving as Judge of the 61st District Court from January 1, 1969 until his retirement in 1984. He was very active in the Grand Rapids Lions Club, and the Grand Rapids Elks Lodge.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 750 Gladstone SE, the Rev. Paul Milanowski, Celebrant.
