"The Martyr Regiment"

The regiment received this nickname because over a third of its number died of disease in the latter months of 1863 in Louisiana & Mississippi after the Siege of Vicksburg. Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able-bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry.

Loomis, Franklin A. Age 18. Residence Frankville,Iowa nativity New York. Enlisted Aug. 20, 1862. Mustered Dec. 3, 1862. Died Sept. 6, 1864, New Orleans, La.

Those Union soldiers who died at New Orleans were interred at Chalmette National Cemetery after the war. Many headboards were no longer legible or vandalized. These soldiers were marked unknowns.
