GRIM REAPER'S WORK
In our issue last week, we made mention of the passing of Prate Chesney, at his home, in Robstown, Texas. The death of Mr. Chesney removes another one of the early settlers of Holt County, and another one of those ruggedly honest, earnest, sincere citizens. You knew him as one of those men, who was ever ready to meet and deal with his fellow man strictly on the square, who never wanted a dollar that was not his, and did not come to him by honest, fair dealing. His word was as good as his bond, and you ever knew where to find him, as a neighbor and friend.
He came here with his parents from Moniteau County, Missouri, when a mere child of three years, and up to the spring of 1912, had spent all of his life in this county. He witnessed and helped the development of that section around Forest City from a wilderness to one of the most productive sections of our county.
He went south in March, 1912, selling his farm, not because he was dissatisfied with his surroundings or his holding, but his health might be benefitted, and in his going, he felt keenly the parting from old friends, neighbors, and associates.
He was born in Moniteau county, Missouri, February 26, 1845, and died at Robstown, Texas, January 19, 1913, aged 67 years, 10 months and 23 days. In 1868, he led Miss Alice Sipes to the Altar, and they traveled life's pathway until four years ago, struggling their struggles and successes, their storms and sunshines, and only did they part, by the decree of the Master, which called her and him to the higher and better land. They were the parents of nine children, six of whom survive. These are John S., Edgar C.,
and Grace of Robstown; Jesse T., Henry D., and Mrs. D.C. Stallard of Forest City. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Elder of St. Joseph; Mrs. Matilda Walker of Forest City and Mrs. Paula Massey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, all of whom attended the funeral, which was held at the Forest City M.E. Church, January 22, and was conducted by the Pastor, Rev. C.C. Miller, the interment being in the Oregon cemetery.
