Alfred J. "Pete" Rogers, 86, of Greenbank, Washington, and formerly of Kendallville died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, in his residence.

Alfred Joseph Rogers was born Alfonsas Rodowich on September 10, 1927, in Newark, New Jersey, to Walter and Anele (Varnis) Radowich, Lithuanian immigrants. Mr. Rogers spent his formative years in Coaldale, Pennsylvania, moving to Kendallville in 1944. He worked as a barber in Kendallville for 47 years, retiring in 1995.

He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1945 and Indiana Barber College in 1948.

Mr. Rogers was a United States Merchant Mariner from 1945 to 1947, and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952.

He was a member of Kendallville BPOE 1194, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, and Kendallville American Legion Post 86. He was a Noble County Democrat Precinct Committeeman for 25 years and served on the Wayne Township Advisory Board for 12 years.

Mr. Rogers enjoyed ice fishing and playing golf. He especially enjoyed following his son's and grandson's sports activities at the high school and college level.

He married Clarice Joy Whysong on August 11, 1956, in Helmer. They lived in the Cree Lake area for 51 years. His retirement winters were spent at his Greenbank, Washington home.

Surviving are his wife, Clarice Rogers of Greenbank, Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Catherine Rogers of Midlothian, Texas and Eric and Dana Rogers of Coupeville, Washington; two grandsons, Jared and Devin Rogers of Midlothian, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Peter James Rogers on February 28, 1995; his parents; three sisters; and a brother.

A memorial service will be Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 12 noon in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville. Officiating will be Rev. Dan Stone. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.

Military graveside honors will be presented by Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Rome City American Legion Post 381, and Kendallville American Legion Post 86.

A gathering of family & friends will be Saturday, August 2, 2014, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the funeral home.
