"Robert (Bud) A. Kifer, passed away August 11, 2002 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho Falls, Idaho of complications from pneumonia. He was born August 22, 1922 at Warland, Lincoln County, Mont. to Robert Pattison Kifer and Ruby Elsie Lamberton Kifer.
Bud and his family moved to the Methow Valley, above Winthrop, where his dad, Bob, worked as a sawyer at the old Fender Mill. As a high school student, Bud and many of his classmates fought fires and hired out as hands for harvest.
Bud is also fondly remembered, as one newspaper put it, as "the little fireballer" pitcher for the Winthrop High baseball team and the quarterback for the football team.
Bud graduated from Winthrop High School June 2, 1941 and was the class valedictorian. He then attended Washington State College (now Washington State University) in Pullman from 1941-1942. In 1942 duty called and Bud joined the U. S. Navy, serving from August 1942 to March 1946 as an aviation radio/radar technician, ART 1st Class. It was here that he obtained his first love of flying.
Bud was selected for pilot training and attended Texas A & M, Cornell College, and Iowa State University as part of his training. During this time, he was also a pitcher for the All Navy Baseball team and his team won the service championship.
Bud met Barbara King, known as Becky to many family members, in Washington D.C. They were married there on September 22, 1944. They were later divorced in 1963.
From 1946 to 1951, Bud operated a fuel distributorship for Shell Oil Company and later moved to Brewster. The remainder of his working life Bud worked in the experimental nuclear reactor field as a nuclear test engineer.
In 1951, Bud and family moved to the Tri-Cities area, where GE at the Hanford A.E.C. site employed him. In 1957, Bud and family again moved, and settled in the Idaho Falls area. He was employed by Atomics International/North American Aviation and later moved to the Los Angeles area with the company.
Bud married Eleanor Mandel Peck in 1970 at Sherman Oaks, Calif., but was later divorced. He returned to Idaho Falls in 1972 and worked for Argonne National Laboratory on the fast breeder reactor programs. He retired in 1985.
In 1988, Bud married the former Yvette Creek, who remained his loving spouse until his death.
Bud is survived by his wife, Yvette, and his children Paul Kifer of Boise, Idaho; Daniel (Kathy) Kifer of Powell, Wyo.; David (Karen) Kifer of Denver, Colo.; Kathy (Mark) Mulberry of Idaho Falls.; Michel (Rose) Creek of Virginia.; and Christine Creek (Ken) Rich, of Seattle; grandchildren Sandi Kifer Daniels, Robert Kifer of Colo., Ben Kifer, Omaha, Neb.; Thomas, Jed, and Matt Kifer of Powell, Wyo.; Ryan and Nicole Mulberry of Idaho Falls; Mary, Tyler, and Michael Creek, VA. and Alexa Rich of Seattle.
Bud often mesmerized us with his stories of the oldtimers from his boyhood days. He was an avid reader and some of his favorite times were spent fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
Funeral Services are Wednesday, August 14, 2002 in Idaho Falls. A graveside memorial service will be held on August 16 at the Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop."
